It's a known fact that Toronto is a melting pot for different cultures. The African diaspora has planted seeds all over the globe, influencing styles, sounds and cuisine. Seeing these connections and drawing on those synergies here at home, friends WAN (Manifesto, Main Ingredient) & CHINEDU (Supafrik, Chine Designs) decided the climate was ripe to introduce GUMBO. A party experience where Afro-vibes come full circle. A night where you can soak in Afrobeats / Soca / Reggae / Hip-Hop / House and everything in between.
When WAN & CHI approached me to create event visuals and promos for their parties, I knew exactly what they needed....Punchy, layered visuals with loads of energy, movement and style. Imagery that connects the dots between African, Caribbean, Latin and North American influences, presenting them in a visual mash-up format intended for online + social. We've managed to capture the vibe of the night and the spirit of what GUMBO represents. So far they've gained a very receptive audience and the event has lit new fires in cities outside Toronto.... New Orleans, Montreal, and most recent Brooklyn, NY for AFROPUNK 2017.
